Sierra Club Day Hike

Join HYP as we hike through the Sipsey Wilderness to the famed Big Tree, the largest yellow poplar in the state of Alabama! This hike will be led by expert hikers and adventurers from the North Alabama Chapter of the Sierra Club.

Sipsey Wilderness area is located in the Bankhead National Forest. This land is well known for it's waterfalls, creeks, limestone bluffs, and untouched forests. It has some of the most beautiful trails in North Alabama.

We will hike close to 10 miles, so be sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, and a lunch. BRING PLENTY OF WATER! There is not much elevation change, but it is 10 miles and you will be crossing several downed trees.

There is no cell reception in Bankhead National Forest, so plan accordingly. Please stay with the group.

You must be at least 18 years of to participate in HYP hikes. No dogs.

We will carpool from Huntsville. SUVs recommended. We will meet at Space and Rocket Center parking lot at 7:00 AM. We will depart at 7:30 AM. The address is: 1 Tranquility Base, Huntsville, AL 35805

We will then begin a roughly 1.5 hour drive to the trailhead. The hike will begin from the Thompson Trailhead: Thompson Trailhead, Mt Hope, AL 35651.
