Dog Day Out: Volunteer with Huntsville Animal Services

Brighten a shelter dog's day with a special hike and some one-on-one attention outside of the shelter on Saturday, June 17th as HYP volunteers at Huntsville Animal Services from 7:30 AM to 1:00 PM.

Volunteers will meet at Huntsville Animal Services (HAS) at 4950 Triana Blvd where they will be divided into small groups. The groups will rotate through different activities including hiking dogs at a nearby location, playing with dogs in the HAS play yard, and helping around the shelter in other ways. Slightly uncomfortable around animals? There will be other ways to volunteer that involve less animal interaction like greeting potential adopters.

Volunteers will be needed to help transport dogs from HAS to the nearby hiking location. Consider bringing a towel or sheet to place in your vehicle if planning on transporting a dog. Leashes, poop bags, etc will be provided. Please wear an orange shirt to help indicate that you're a volunteer. Please arrive by 7:30 AM for an overview and to be divided into small groups. 


Due to the interest and high demand of this event, we are asking for volunteers to pay $10 to save their volunteer spot. After you volunteer, you will be reimbursed your full payment or you can choose to donate the payment to assist Huntsville Animal Services further.  If you do not cancel your volunteer spot by June 10th or you do not show up to volunteer, you will not be reimbursed  and your payment will be used to buy requested items for Huntsville Animal Services.  Volunteer spot priority is given to individuals between the ages of 21 and 39.

HYP Annual Canoe and Kayak Trip

It's finally summer! Join Huntsville Young Professionals as we paddle down Flint River in canoes and kayaks.

We will meet at North Alabama Canoe & Kayak - NACK, approximately 15 minutes outside of Huntsville, at 7:45 AM.

Price per person is the following (Cash Only!):
- $45 for single-person kayak
- $35 for two-person canoe
- $35 for two- person kayak

and includes canoe/ kayak rental, paddle, personal flotation device, and transportation to and from the drop-off and pick-up points.

If you have your own gear, there is a $15 transportation fee for drop-off/ pick-up.

This will be a 4.5+ hour trip down the free-flowing waterway with breaks for snacks and lunch. This will be an easy paddle, so do not worry about your experience level. Just plan on having a good time!

What to bring:
- Lunch and other snacks
- Cooler (or plan to share a cooler with others)
- Beverage of choice (bring water!)
- Dry-box or ziploc bags for non-waterproof items
- Towel
- Bathing suit
- Sunglasses, hat, etc.

You will be helping children create sculptures out of pipe cleaners and other craft items. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and weather appropriate clothing so you can check in early and stay late to visit all the artists' booths. Volunteering includes free admission to the event all day Saturday.

Join Huntsville Young Professionals as we volunteer for the Soggy Bottom Boat Race on Saturday, April 1st from 7:30 AM to 1:00 PM! The Soggy Bottom Boat Race is a cardboard boat race across the lake at UAH. This fun-filled event is organized by the Leadership Huntsville/Madison CountyConnect 19 class, and all proceeds will benefit Manna House. Manna House is a local non-profit that distributes necessary items like food, clothing, hygiene products and baby items to those in need. 

Volunteers will be part of the action all day beginning with set-up and ending with tear-down. In between volunteers will help with registration, helping with the race, and other roles. Volunteers should wear clothes and shoes that may become dirty or wet. No swimming will be involved.

Retro Games: Spring Fever Edition

The Retro Games are back for another year with pick-up games of dodge ball, kickball, wiffle ball, and more! There will also be corn hole, can jam, and other two-person games. These may be the games you grew up with, but see how your skills are now that you're (mostly) an adult!

There is no registration required, just show up at Brahan Spring Park (soccer fields) on Sunday, March 19th from 1 to 4 pm to join in the fun. 

Please remember to Prepare accordingly by using sunscreen, wearing appropriate clothing, and drink lots of WATER! Please make sure you BRING WATER to stay safe by keeping yourself hydrated throughout the afternoon!

Play GO Kickball with HYP - Spring 2017

Join Huntsville Young Professionals as we play Huntsville GOkickball this spring season! Sign up to play with HYP and receive a $12 discount code (must play on an HYP team). Games will be Wednesday evenings beginning on Wednesday, March 29th. There will be seven games and a playoff. Each team will play one game a night with the earliest game beginning at 6:30 PM and the latest game beginning at 9:00 PM. Games will be played at the Kiwanis Club fields at the corner of Bob Wallace Ave and Patton Rd.

How this will work:

2. Once you've submitted the interest survey, you will be sent the information for the discount code, the team name, and the team invitation to join. 

3. Visit gokickball.com/huntsville/ to register. Registration is $56.95 with a $12 discount bringing the cost to $44.95. 

4. After registering with GO Kickball, HYP will be notified. Once registration closes on March 18th, the HYP team captains will split participants into teams. We expect to have multiple teams. 

5. You will be notified of your team, your team color, and team captain via email. 

6. You'll be invited to join a secret, closed Facebook group. We will use the Facebook group and email to notify team members of games, practicies, and other things. 

Games begin March 29th. There will be 7 games and playoffs. As it is spring, there may be weather delays. If this occurs, the game will be rescheduled.

Walk in the St. Patrick's Day Parade w. HYP

Join Huntsville Young Professionals as we participate in the 40th Annual Huntsville St. Patrick's Day on Saturday, March 11th.  The parade route is a bit over 1.5 miles long.  Staging for the parade will begin at 10:00 AM with all staging complete by 10:30 AM. The parade starts at 11:30.  Please arrive at "Lot K" between Holmes Ave and Clinton Ave by 10:00 AM.  

To participate with HYP, we are requesting that people pre-register and pay $17 by Thursday, March 2nd, so that t-shirts can be ordered in time for the parade.  

The $17 registration cost covers a 2017 St. Patrick's Day shirt uniquely designed for HYP and items like candy and knick knacks to pass out along the parade route.

The t-shirts are printed on Gildan softstyle jersey t-shirts (softer than a normal t-shirt).  These run a little small, so if you are on the fence about a size, you may want to go with the larger size.  Sizes are available from S through 3X.  There are 3 color options (pictures below).  View more about sizing here.

HYP Serves The Homeless

Join Huntsville Young Professionals on Saturday, March 4th where we will be serving lunch at the Downtown Rescue Mission, an organization that helps homeless people in the Huntsville/ Madison County community. 

Arrival time is at 10:30 AM, and serving is expected to be complete around 12:30 PM. Plastic gloves and aprons for food safety requirements will be provided. 

Please do not wear shorts or short skirts. Shirts must have sleeves.

#ExpeditionHacks Huntsville

We’ve seen first-hand the deadly results of floods. The challenge is knowing where and when exactly the floods will take place and staying in front of the impending natural disaster. With no controlling mother nature, the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency and City of Huntsville are sponsoring the opportunity for ANYONE to come make a real difference during this two day hackathon!

Join us in creating a solution for this local (and global) problem! The grand prize for this two-day hackathon is $3,000!

Hike Walls of Jericho with HYP

Join us for a day trip to hike the Walls Of Jericho trail near the Alabama-Tennessee state line.

THIS IS A STRENUOUS HIKE with over 1000ft of elevation descent on the way in and climb on the way out. We will start at the Alabama Trailhead and hike down to the Walls of Jericho, a natural amplitheater formed from water erosion of limestone, take a break in the basin for lunch, and hike back out for a total round trip of about 7 miles. The recommended time allocation is 6 hours. 


THIS IS A STRENUOUS 7 MILE HIKE!!!

What to bring:
- Comfortable shoes, preferably hiking shoes or boots - The trail is often muddy.
- 2 to 3 liters of water - This is a strenuous hike, you will need water.
- Snacks and lunch - We will take a break at the walls.
- Medication or any special personal items required on a day-trip. 
- A sense of adventure!

Meet at 8am in the Books-A-Million Parking lot to car-pool/convoy (1001-7 Memorial Pkwy NW, Huntsville, AL 35801). The drive to the trailhead is just over an hour.

Hit the Barre with HYP

Whether you are a barre veteran or looking to try your first barre experience (or kind of scared of barre, like I am) hit the barre with HYP in a **FREE** class at Xtend Barre Huntsville!

This class is limited to the first 20 participants so please sign up ASAP through the form in the pinned post in this event.

Class starts at 10:30am on Saturday, Feb. 11th. We ask that everyone arrives at least 15 minutes early (by 10:15am) to fill out a liability waiver and get settled.

Things you will need:
- grippy socks (can be purchased at Xtend Barre for $14). If you do not have grippy socks, regular socks are acceptable but will cause you to slide around.
- water bottle
- towel
- get ready to sweat!
